What is the Desert?
You cannot take hold of it, and you cannot get rid of it; it goes on its own way. You speak and it is silent; you remain silent, and it speaks.
Yoka Daishi, Song of Enlightenment
Welcome artists and writers to the home of The Joshua Tree Experiential ARTS and WRITING retreat! At our retreat you will encounter a series of experiential workshops curated by facilitators Sean Negus and Ariel Fintushel taking place at our host site∗ and also within Joshua Tree National Park. Our goals for the weekend are: generate new work, form a transient community of artists, and meet the intersection of creative praxis and natural landscape. At the end of our 3–day series, you can submit work to be included in a desert anthology.
Our hands-on workshops include High Noon Ceremony, Altered States and Psycho-Spiritual Legacies of the Desert, and Desert Alchemy and Wabi Sabi at 49 Palms Oasis Workshops (scroll down to see a complete list). We also have featured readings around a fire pit with authors Ruth Nolan and L.I. Henley. Our first meeting is 6pm on November 17 at the host site – We hope to see you there! Directions are forthcoming.
∗ Our host site is 4815 Meriwether Rd., Twentynine Palms CA 92277 (click address for map and directions)
∗∗ Food and lodging are not included although we will have snacks and beverages to share! See
Accommodations for a list of accommodations as well as "Resources" for a list of suggested desert literature, music, and films!
